How does Google calculate star ratings?

Google uses a plain arithmetic mean. It adds up the star value of every published review and divides it by the total number of reviews. There is no secret sauce, no Bayesian smoothing, and no weighting for recent reviews versus old reviews. The final number is simply rounded to one decimal place.

What is a good Google star rating? Is 4.5 good?

Yes, 4.5 to 4.8 is the "sweet spot" for local search visibility and customer trust. Research shows that customer purchase intent actually peaks between 4.2 and 4.6 stars. Customers often view a perfect 5.0 rating with skepticism, assuming the reviews might be fake or heavily filtered, especially if the business has very few of them.

Why does my rating barely move when I get new 5-star reviews?

This is the "denominator problem." Because your average is divided by your total review count, a large existing volume dilutes the impact of each new review. Adding one 5-star review to a profile with 20 reviews moves the needle noticeably. Adding one 5-star review to a profile with 2,000 reviews barely registers. High volume makes your rating stable, which protects you from bad reviews but makes recovering a low score much slower.

How many 5-star reviews do I need to negate a 1-star review?

It generally takes between 4 to 10 new 5-star reviews to offset a single 1-star review and restore your previous average, depending entirely on how many total reviews you have. If you have fewer than 25 reviews, a single 1-star review is devastating and can drop your rating by several tenths of a star instantly.

Unlike basic calculators, this tool accounts for Google's rounding edge cases. Google rounds its displayed rating to the nearest tenth. That means you do not mathematically need a perfect 4.8 to display a "4.8" on your profile—you only need to reach 4.75.

The mathematical formulas used in this estimator are:

Average = Total Points ÷ Total Reviews

Target Display Threshold = Target Rating - 0.05

Reviews Needed = [Current Reviews × (Threshold - Current Rating)] ÷ (Avg New Review - Threshold)

Why a pure 5.0 is practically impossible: If you currently have a 4.9 rating and want to hit exactly 5.0, you will notice the tool says "Impossible" for the exact threshold. Mathematically, if you have even a single 4-star or 1-star review in your history, no amount of 5-star reviews will ever make your true average a pure 5.0 (it will just approach 4.999...). However, by reaching 4.95, Google will round it up and beautifully display a 5.0 for you.
