How to calculate a percentage discount

1
Choose the direction
Use original-to-sale mode for a normal discount. Use sale-to-original mode when you know the discounted price and want to recover the pre-discount price.
2
Enter the price and discount
Enter a per-item price and the advertised percentage off. A 25% discount means the customer pays 75% of the original price.
3
Add quantity and tax if needed
Quantity multiplies all per-item amounts. Sales tax is applied after the discount to the discounted subtotal.
4
Review the complete breakdown
The result separates original total, total savings, discounted subtotal, sales tax, and final total so the calculation can be checked.

Percent-off and reverse-discount formulas

A discount rate is converted from a percentage to a decimal before it is applied. The reverse formula divides the known sale price by the fraction that remained after the discount.

Discount amount = Original price × (Discount ÷ 100)

Sale price = Original price × (1 − Discount ÷ 100)

Original price from sale price = Sale price ÷ (1 − Discount ÷ 100)

Final total = Sale price × Quantity × (1 + Tax ÷ 100)

Currency selection changes the display symbol and label only; it does not perform foreign-exchange conversion. Seller rounding and local sales-tax rules can produce small differences at checkout.

Methodology, assumptions and sources

The calculator uses standard retail discount equations. Values remain at JavaScript number precision during the calculation and are rounded to two decimal places only for currency display.

Tax is applied to the discounted subtotal. This is a transparent planning convention, not a determination of which items, fees, or discounts are taxable in a particular jurisdiction.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 25% off?

Multiply the original price by 0.25 to find the savings, then subtract that amount. Equivalently, multiply the original price by 0.75 to get the sale price directly.

Can I find the original price from the sale price?

Yes. Choose reverse mode. The calculator divides the known sale price by one minus the discount rate.

Is sales tax calculated before or after the discount?

This calculator applies tax to the discounted subtotal. Actual tax treatment can depend on the seller, item, coupon type, and jurisdiction.

Does changing currency convert exchange rates?

No. Currency selection changes the symbol and label only; the numeric amounts are not converted.
