How to measure for rubber mulch
Determine your application depth
If you are using rubber mulch for landscaping or garden beds, a 2-inch depth provides adequate weed suppression and moisture retention. For residential backyard playgrounds, a 4-inch depth is the standard to protect children from falls off average-sized equipment. For commercial playgrounds, a 6-inch depth is mandated by ASTM guidelines for heavy use and taller structures.
Calculate the playground "Fall Zone"
When mulching under play equipment, you cannot stop exactly at the edge of the swing set. Safety guidelines require extending the mulch at least 6 feet outward in all directions from the equipment to create an adequate safety fall zone. Make sure your length and width measurements include this extra boundary.
Account for compaction
Unlike wood mulch that decomposes, shredded rubber mulch displaces and compacts under heavy foot traffic. It is highly recommended to add a 10% to 15% compaction allowance to your total order so that your playground maintains the minimum required safety depth over time.
Choose your delivery format
Rubber mulch is incredibly dense (averaging 800 lbs per cubic yard). Large playground projects are most economical when purchased in 1-ton "Super Sacks" delivered on pallets. For smaller landscape beds, buying standard 1.5 cubic foot bags from a hardware store is much easier to carry and maneuver.

The large 1.5 cubic foot bags sold at major hardware retailers will cover exactly 9 square feet of ground when spread at a 2-inch landscaping depth. If you are using it for a 4-inch deep playground bed, that same bag will only cover 4.5 square feet.
