How to measure for chain link fencing

Understand Terminal vs. Line Posts
Chain link mesh is pulled tight like a drum. This means all the tension rests on the Terminal Posts (the thick posts used at corners, ends, and gates). Line posts (the thinner intermediate posts) do not hold tension; they simply keep the mesh upright and support the top rail.
Apply the 10-Foot Spacing Rule
Industry standards and ASTM guidelines dictate that line posts can be spaced a maximum of 10 feet apart on center for standard residential fencing. However, if you plan to install privacy slats (which act like a sail and catch the wind), you must reduce your post spacing to 8 feet to prevent the fence from blowing over during storms.
Count your gates correctly
Every single gate you add automatically requires two heavy terminal posts to support the hinges and latch. Walk gates are typically 4 feet wide, while drive gates are constructed as double-swinging 10- or 12-foot spans.
Don't forget the bottom tension wire
While a top rail is standard, the bottom of the chain link mesh is often left loose. If you have dogs that like to dig or push under fences, you must install a 7-gauge bottom tension wire. This wire is stretched between terminal posts and clipped to the bottom of the mesh with hog rings to keep it rigid.
