Calculate the face area
Retaining walls are priced by the "face foot" (square footage of the exposed wall). Multiply the length of the wall by the exposed height. Note: Contractors will actually build the wall slightly taller, as proper installation requires burying the bottom course of blocks for stabilization.
Select the right material
Treated timber is the cheapest upfront but will inevitably rot and fail in 10-15 years due to ground contact. Interlocking segmental concrete blocks (like Keystone or Versa-Lok) are the industry standard, offering a 50+ year lifespan at a mid-tier price point without needing mortar.
Beware the 4-Foot Rule
In almost all North American municipalities, any retaining wall taller than 4 feet (measured from the bottom of the buried block to the top cap) requires a building permit and stamped blueprints from a licensed structural engineer. This instantly adds $1,000+ to your budget and requires extensive geogrid tie-backs.
Budget for mandatory drainage
Walls rarely fail from the weight of the dirt; they blow out from the weight of trapped water (hydrostatic pressure). A proper quote must include installing a 4-inch perforated drain pipe behind the base of the wall, buried under at least 12 inches of clean, crushed (#57) stone backfill.
