How to measure for new countertops

Measure in inches, not feet

Countertop fabrication is incredibly precise. Measure the length of your back walls in inches. While a standard base cabinet is 24 inches deep, your countertop requires a 1.5 to 2-inch front overhang, making the standard cut depth 25.5 to 26 inches.

Do not subtract your sink or cooktop

This is the most common homeowner mistake. The fabricator has to utilize an entire solid slab. The square footage that gets cut out for your under-mount sink or drop-in range is thrown in the dumpster—you still have to pay for that raw material.

Factor in the backsplash

A standard 4-inch stone lip takes very little material (usually 3 to 6 sq ft). However, a modern "full-height" stone backsplash that runs 18 inches up the wall to meet your upper cabinets can easily add 25 to 40 square feet to the project, often requiring an entirely separate slab.

Understand Slab vs. Sq Ft Pricing

Big-box hardware stores typically charge a flat rate per "installed" square foot. Independent stone fabricators require you to buy the raw slabs outright. This means if your kitchen requires 60 square feet and a slab holds 55 square feet, you are forced to purchase two entire slabs.

Do I subtract the sink and cooktop from my square footage?

No. You pay for the entire slab of stone before any cuts are made. The rectangular pieces cut out of the slab to make room for your undermount sink or drop-in cooktop become fabrication waste. In fact, fabricators charge an extra $200 to $400 in labor purely to make these precision cuts.

What is a waterfall edge and how much does it cost?

A waterfall edge is a design feature where the countertop material makes a 90-degree turn and runs down the side of the cabinet to the floor. Each waterfall panel typically adds 15 to 18 square feet of material to your order, plus a substantial labor upcharge to cut the complex mitered seam at the top edge.

Why does vein-matching require more material?

If you purchase a material with heavy, dramatic lines (like Calacatta quartz or natural marble), the fabricator must align those veins perfectly where two pieces of countertop meet at a seam. This process is highly inefficient and forces them to throw away large, otherwise usable chunks of the slab just to make the pattern match up. You must account for a 20% to 25% waste factor for heavily veined stones.

Why is my quote higher than my square footage calculation?

If your kitchen has exactly 52 square feet of counter space, but the material you chose comes in 45 square foot slabs, you are legally required to purchase two entire slabs (90 sq ft total). Furthermore, quotes include linear foot charges for polishing the edges, hole-drilling fees for faucets, and template/installation labor.
