Grass seed quantity formula
The calculator scales a label application rate to the entered lawn area. Imperial rates are expressed in pounds per 1,000 square feet, while metric rates are kilograms per 100 square meters.
Adjusted seed = Base seed × (1 + Extra allowance ÷ 100)
Whole bags = ceil(Adjusted seed ÷ Bag weight)
Purchased weight = Whole bags × Bag weight
The extra allowance is applied after the base seed requirement. Whole bags are rounded upward, but the displayed weight retains the calculated amount so excess from packaging is visible.

Methodology, assumptions and sources
Imperial quantities are calculated in pounds from square feet and a pounds-per-1,000-square-feet rate. Metric quantities use kilograms per 100 square meters. Unit switching converts the existing area, rate, and bag weight so the physical quantity remains consistent.
University of Minnesota Extension notes that fine-fescue rates can vary and recommends buying extra seed for areas with poor germination. The calculator therefore leaves both rate and extra allowance visible instead of assigning one universal lawn-seed rule.
