About this calculator
This crushed stone calculator helps contractors and homeowners quickly estimate the exact material quantities needed for base layers, driveways, and construction fill. Purchasing bulk stone by the ton or cubic yard can be tricky to visualize, so we handle the dimensional conversion for you.
The calculations utilize the standard weight density for angular crushed stone:
Volume (Cubic Yards) = Cubic Feet ÷ 27
Tons Needed = Cubic Yards × 1.4
Bags Needed = Cubic Feet ÷ 0.5 (assuming standard 0.5 cu ft bags)
We strongly recommend calculating a 5% to 10% waste and compaction buffer. When you apply a plate compactor to crushed stone, it compresses significantly. If you order the exact raw mathematical volume, you will likely fall short of your target finished depth.
