Measure at the Root Flare
Do not measure the tree trunk at chest height. Contractors price jobs by the diameter at ground level where the root flare is the widest. If the ground mounds up around the base, you must measure straight across the entire dirt mound that needs to be ground flat.

Standard grinding goes 4 to 6 inches below grade, which is deep enough to allow grass to grow over the spot. Removal leaves a large crater and is generally $100 to $200 more expensive than grinding, but it is necessary if you are laying concrete foundations or building an addition.
Will the tree grow back after grinding?
No. In 95% of cases, grinding the stump 4 to 6 inches below the surface destroys the "root crown," which is the biological center of the tree. Without the crown, the roots cannot sprout and will slowly decay. Certain highly aggressive species (like willow or elm) might occasionally send up thin root suckers, which can be easily managed with a standard brush killer.
