How to use this acres per hour calculator

Enter your operating speed
Input the sustained speed you plan to drive the machine across the field in MPH. Be realistic—do not enter the tractor's top road speed, use the speed you can actually maintain while the implement is engaged.
Enter your working width
Input the physical width of your implement (the mower deck, spray boom, or tillage tool) and select whether you measured in inches or feet. Be sure to use the working width, not the overall frame width.
Adjust the efficiency factor
Machines are never 100% efficient. Set the slider to account for time lost to turning at the headlands, overlapping your rows, and stopping to refill seed or spray tanks. 80% is a safe baseline for most operations.

What is the standard formula for acres per hour?

The industry standard formula is (Width in Feet × Speed in MPH × Efficiency %) ÷ 8.25. If you are measuring a mower deck in inches, the formula changes slightly to (Width in Inches × Speed in MPH × Efficiency %) ÷ 99. The constants (8.25 and 99) handle all the conversions between feet, miles, and acres.

What is a normal operating efficiency?

Efficiency depends entirely on the operation. Large-field broadcast spraying can hit 85–90% efficiency. Primary tillage and mowing is usually around 80–85%. Row crop planting, which requires frequent stops to refill hoppers, usually operates at 70–80%. If you are working in a small, irregular field with lots of turns and obstacles, your efficiency will plummet to 55–65%.

Why do landscapers divide by 100 instead of 99?

Dividing by 100 is a "shop floor" mental math trick used to quickly estimate 100% theoretical capacity in your head without a calculator. Mathematically, 43,560 square feet (an acre) divided by 5,280 (feet in a mile) is exactly 8.25. Multiply that by 12 inches, and you get exactly 99. This calculator uses the precise 99 denominator for absolute accuracy.

How do I account for overlap?

To avoid leaving uncut strips of grass or unplanted rows of soil, operators deliberately overlap their previous pass by a few inches. This effectively reduces your machine's working width. You can either subtract your overlap directly from the "Working Width" input, or simply lower your efficiency slider by 3-5% to account for it.
