How to estimate sand quantity
Sand volume, weight, and bag formulas
Sand volume is surface area multiplied by depth. The calculator converts all inputs to cubic feet, applies overage, and then converts the result to cubic yards and cubic meters.
Adjusted volume = Base volume × (1 + Overage ÷ 100)
Estimated weight = Adjusted volume × Bulk density
Whole bags = ceil(Estimated weight ÷ Bag weight)
Weight is volume multiplied by the user-entered bulk density. This is an estimate because the same nominal sand can change density with moisture, grading, handling, and compaction.

Methodology, assumptions and sources
Imperial calculations convert depth from inches to feet. Metric calculations convert centimeters to meters and cubic meters to cubic feet using exact NIST relationships. Overage is applied after base volume.
The default density is a neutral planning input, not a product claim. Users should replace it with supplier data. QUIKRETE’s product page demonstrates that packaged all-purpose sand is sold in more than one bag weight, so the bag-weight input remains adjustable.
