How to use this calculator
Formula and worked example
Area mode: sheets = round up[(gross area − excluded area) × layers × (1 + allowance ÷ 100) ÷ sheet area]
Grid mode: columns = round up(rectangle length ÷ sheet length)
Grid rows = round up(rectangle width ÷ sheet width)
Grid sheets = round up(rows × columns × layers × (1 + allowance ÷ 100))
When allowed, compare the same grid with sheet length and width exchanged.
For 320 ft², one layer, 4 × 8 ft coverage and a 10% allowance, the area estimate is ceil(320 × 1.10 ÷ 32) = 11 sheets. For a 20 × 16 ft rectangle with 8-ft sheet length along the 20-ft side, the no-offcut grid is 3 × 4 = 12 sheets before allowance, or 14 with 10% extra. If rotation is permitted, a 5 × 2 grid uses 10 before allowance, or 11 after it.

Methodology and sources
Area mode is a quantity estimate; grid mode is an axis-aligned, no-offcut-reuse model. The rotation comparison is not a globally optimized sheet layout. No structural design, thickness selection, fastener schedule, kerf optimization or code compliance is performed. The default panel dimensions and allowance are editable examples.
