Estimate how many drywall panels a rectangular room needs. Choose 4×8, 4×10, or 4×12 sheets, subtract measured opening area, include the ceiling if needed, and add waste.
How to estimate drywall sheets
Drywall sheet quantity formula
Gross wall area is the room perimeter multiplied by height. Opening area is subtracted from the walls, and ceiling area is added only when selected. The resulting face area is multiplied by the number of layers.
Net surface area = Gross wall area − Openings + Included ceiling area
Layered area = Net surface area × Layers
Adjusted area = Layered area × (1 + Waste ÷ 100)
Sheets required = ceil(Adjusted area ÷ Sheet area)
The final result is based on sheet face area and rounds upward. It is a material-quantity estimate, not a panel layout or a wall-system specification.

Methodology, assumptions and sources
The calculator uses rectangular-room surface area and a user-entered opening deduction. It does not assume standard door or window sizes. Panel coverage is the selected sheet width multiplied by length.
Waste is applied after net area and layers. The sheet result is rounded upward because fractional panels cannot normally be purchased, but an area-only calculation cannot optimize seams, staggered joints, backing, full-height layout, or offcut reuse.
