About this calculator
This pool salt calculator is designed for homeowners and pool maintenance professionals to determine the precise mass of salt required to balance a saltwater pool. Maintaining the correct parts per million (ppm) is critical for ensuring your salt water generator (SWG) successfully converts salt into active chlorine.
The calculation uses the standard chemical dosing formula based on the weight of water:
Salt Needed (lbs) = Water Weight × (Target ppm - Current ppm) ÷ 1,000,000
Because you cannot chemically lower salt levels once they are too high, we highly recommend adding the calculated amount of salt incrementally. Add about 75% of the recommended bags, brush it into the deep end, let the pump run for 24 hours, and test the water again before adding the remainder.
