How to calculate limestone volume and weight

Measure the square footage
Measure the length and width of your trench, driveway, or patio area. For circular features, measure the diameter, treat it as a square, and apply a 10-15% waste reduction if needed.
Determine the finished depth
Enter the final thickness you require. French drains generally need 12-18 inches of #57 stone. Standard driveway bases require 6 inches of dense graded limestone, while walking paths only require 3-4 inches.
Select the correct grade
Choose your limestone type. Clean #57 stone (roughly 1-inch) is washed and lacks fines, weighing less per yard. Dense Graded Base (#411 or crusher run) contains stone dust that packs tightly, making it significantly heavier per cubic yard.
Apply compaction factors
If you are installing a driveway base (#411), you must select 15-20% compaction shrinkage. The vibratory plate compactor will crush the dust into the air voids. If you are installing clean #57 stone for drainage, you only need 5% for general spill waste since it does not compact.

What is the difference between #57 and #411 limestone?

#57 limestone is "clean" or "washed" stone roughly 1-inch to 1.5-inches in size. Because it lacks small particles and dust, it does not compact and is used primarily for drainage systems like French drains or as a porous top layer. #411 limestone (also called dense graded base) is a mixture of #57 stone and limestone dust. When compacted, the dust acts as a binder, locking the stones together to create an incredibly hard, driveway-ready surface.

How much does a cubic yard of limestone weigh?

Limestone density varies by grade. A cubic yard of clean #57 limestone weighs roughly 2,600 to 2,700 lbs (1.30 - 1.35 tons). A cubic yard of #411 base stone is denser due to the added fines, weighing around 2,900 to 3,000 lbs (1.45 - 1.50 tons) when loose. Limestone screenings (dust) typically weigh about 2,500 lbs (1.25 tons) per cubic yard.

Why is limestone bad for some plants?

Limestone is highly alkaline (high pH). When it rains, the runoff from a limestone driveway or path leaches calcium carbonate into the surrounding soil, raising the pH. While this is great for neutralizing acidic lawns, it can damage or kill acid-loving plants like azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries, and hydrangeas if placed too close to their root zones.

Does clean #57 stone need a compaction allowance?

Unlike dense graded base, clean #57 stone does not shrink significantly when run over with a plate compactor because there are no fines to compress into the void spaces. However, you should still include a 5% waste allowance in your calculations to account for spillage, sinking into the mud, and irregular trench depths.
