Estimate the mixture before the binder#
The Bitumen Calculator separates the asphalt mixture placed in the pavement from the binder contained in that mixture. In US paving terminology, the mixture includes aggregate and asphalt binder; the binder alone is not the full truckload. The Asphalt Paving Handbook explains this distinction and placement in lifts.
Start with the footprint and the finished compacted thickness of each specified layer. Keep an aggregate base separate from the asphalt layers. The Crusher Run Calculator can estimate a specified base, but it cannot determine whether that base suits the design.
Tonnage formula in US units#
net short tons = area in ft² × compacted thickness in ft × density in lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000
order short tons = net short tons × (1 + allowance percent ÷ 100)
For a hypothetical 50 ft × 12 ft driveway at 3 in compacted thickness, assume 145 lb/ft³ and 5% overage. These are example inputs, not a pavement specification.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Area | 50 × 12 | 600 ft² |
| Volume | 600 × 3 ÷ 12 | 150 ft³ |
| Net mass | 150 × 145 ÷ 2,000 | 10.875 short tons |
| Order mass | 10.875 × 1.05 | 11.41875 short tons |
Do not apply a second compaction percentage to this mass simply because the placement starts loose. Density and thickness must describe compatible conditions. A separately justified ordering allowance can cover documented purchasing risk without changing the design thickness.
Metric calculation#
net tonnes = area in m² × compacted thickness in m × density in kg/m³ ÷ 1,000
For an independent example, 60 m² × 0.075 m × 2,400 kg/m³ ÷ 1,000 = 10.8 tonnes. A 5% allowance gives 11.34 tonnes. The two examples use different dimensions and density assumptions and are not unit conversions of one project. NIST supplies the conversion basis: a US short ton and a metric tonne differ.
Calculate binder separately#
If the hypothetical job mix states binder is 5% of total mixture mass, the US example's net binder mass is 10.875 × 0.05 = 0.54375 short tons, or 1,087.5 lb. The binder within the allowance-adjusted order is 11.41875 × 0.05 = 0.5709375 short tons. Do not add either number to the total mix order; it is already part of that mixture.
Confirm the percentage basis. A percentage of aggregate mass would require a different calculation. Binder grade and binder content are also separate concepts; selecting a grade does not establish a universal percentage.
Loads and costs use supplier inputs#
At a hypothetical 10-short-ton usable payload, 11.41875 short tons requires two load movements, with the second only partly loaded. The division does not establish legal vehicle capacity or a safe delivery plan.
At an invented $100 per short ton, material alone is $1,141.875, rounded to $1,141.88 for display. This is arithmetic, not a price benchmark. Placement labor, equipment, delivery, base, removal, drainage and tax must be priced separately. Use the asphalt driveway cost tool with actual quotes.
Confirm the complete layer schedule#
Record each layer's area, compacted depth, density, mix designation, allowance and order unit. Keep overlapping areas out of the takeoff. Resolve transitions, drainage and base preparation with the designer and paving contractor. Return to the bitumen and asphalt tool after those inputs are established.
