How many studs do I need for a 10 foot wall?

For a standard 10-foot wall with 16-inch on-center spacing, you will need 9 studs. (120 inches ÷ 16 = 7.5, which rounds up to 8, plus 1 extra stud for the very end of the wall). If you have doors or windows, you will need to add 2-3 extra studs per opening.

Should I use 16-inch or 24-inch stud spacing?

16-inch on-center (OC) is the standard for most residential and commercial construction because it provides strong structural support and naturally aligns with the edges of standard 4x8-foot drywall sheets. 24-inch OC spacing uses fewer materials and is sometimes acceptable for non-load-bearing interior walls or specific advanced framing techniques.

How do I account for doors and windows in my framing?

Openings break the standard framing pattern and require structural reinforcement. You typically need a "king stud" and a "jack stud" on both sides of a door or window. The easiest way to estimate is to add 2 to 3 extra studs to your total count for every opening or wall intersection.

How many top and bottom plates do I need?

Standard wall framing requires three plates running horizontally along the wall: one bottom plate (treated lumber if touching concrete) and two top plates. Therefore, you need 3 times your wall length in linear feet of plate material. Our calculator automatically outputs this total linear footage for you.

The core mathematical formula used by this tool is:

Wall Length (inches) = Wall Length (ft) × 12
Base Studs = (Wall Length (inches) ÷ OC Spacing) + 1 End Stud

Total Studs = Base Studs + Extra Studs + Waste Factor
Plate Linear Feet = Wall Length (ft) × 3 (1 Bottom, 2 Top Plates)

Why the "+ 1 End Stud"? If you have a wall that is 16 inches long, dividing 16 by 16 gives you 1. However, you need a stud at the 0-inch mark to start the wall, and another at the 16-inch mark to finish it. You always need one more stud than the number of spaces between them.
