CMU Block Sizes and Dimensions: 2026 Guide

Compare common U.S. CMU block sizes, nominal and actual dimensions, wall coverage, unit weight factors, and specialty masonry shapes.

CMU size chart: nominal versus typical actual dimensions#

Concrete masonry units are sold by nominal size, but the physical unit is usually smaller. For common modular CMUs, the difference allows room for a mortar joint.

These are typical modular dimensions, not a substitute for the product submittal. Architectural units, split-face units, half-high units, screen units and locally manufactured products may use other dimensions. Manufacturing tolerances also apply.

The order of dimensions can vary among catalogs. This guide lists width (wall thickness) × height × length. Before comparing products, check how the manufacturer labels its dimensions.

What nominal CMU size means#

Nominal dimensions describe the space occupied by one unit in a modular wall, including the intended joint. For a typical 8 × 8 × 16 CMU:

Actual height 7⅝ in + mortar joint ⅜ in = nominal module 8 in
Actual length 15⅝ in + mortar joint ⅜ in = nominal module 16 in

The actual thickness is also commonly ⅜ inch less than the nominal thickness, although the wall’s face-area calculation depends on height and length rather than depth.

This distinction prevents two common estimating errors:

  1. Dividing wall area by the actual 7⅝ × 15⅝-inch face as though the units touch one another.
  2. Starting with a nominal 8 × 16-inch face and then adding another ⅜-inch joint.

Both methods count the joint incorrectly. For a conventional mortared modular wall, the coverage module is the actual face dimension plus one joint, which is ordinarily the nominal face size.

How many square feet does an 8 × 8 × 16 block cover?#

Wall coverage uses the nominal face: 8 inches high by 16 inches long.

Face area = 8 in × 16 in
          = 128 in²

Face area in square feet = 128 ÷ 144
                         = 0.8889 sq ft

Blocks per square foot = 1 ÷ 0.8889
                       = 1.125

Therefore, one standard full-face module covers about 0.889 square feet, and a wall contains 1.125 full-block equivalents per square foot before openings, waste and specialty-unit substitutions.

The same module is approximately 0.0826 square meters, or about 12.1 units per square meter.

Does CMU thickness change the block count?#

Not when the face module remains 8 × 16 inches. A nominal 6-inch CMU and a nominal 12-inch CMU can occupy the same position in a wall elevation:

100 sq ft × 1.125 = 112.5 full-block equivalents

Both would produce the same face count, rounded according to the purchasing plan. But their thickness can materially change:

  • Unit weight and pallet load
  • Wall footprint
  • Mortar bedding volume
  • Cell and grout volume
  • Available space for reinforcement
  • Fire, acoustic and thermal assemblies
  • Structural capacity and permitted use
  • Material and freight cost

Thickness is therefore not a decorative preference or a value to select from block count alone. Use the size and properties shown in the project documents or confirmed by the responsible designer and supplier.

Common CMU face sizes#

The 8 × 16-inch module is common, but it is not the only face size.

The table compares face coverage only. It does not claim that products with those dimensions can be substituted for one another. A half block, corner unit or half-high unit may have a different core configuration, weight, appearance and purpose.

Full blocks, half blocks and specialty CMU shapes#

An area calculation produces equivalent modular positions, not a complete block schedule. Real walls often need more than standard stretcher units.

Stretcher units#

Standard stretcher CMUs form the main field of many walls. Their end configuration supports an ordinary running-bond layout, but exact shapes vary by producer.

Half blocks#

Half-length units commonly occupy an 8 × 8-inch nominal face. They help maintain bond at ends, corners and openings. A half block is not automatically half the purchase price or half the weight of a full unit.

Corner and return units#

Corner units provide the finished geometry needed where wall faces meet. A wall with returns should be laid out course by course so the estimator knows which corners alternate and how many units of each hand or face treatment are required.

Bond-beam and lintel units#

Bond-beam, knockout or lintel units create horizontal spaces for specified reinforcement and grout. They may replace standard units in selected courses. Their grout space should not be added a second time if it is already included in a separate bond-beam quantity.

Jamb, sash and control-joint units#

Openings and movement joints can require special profiles. Subtracting a window’s area does not reveal the jamb, sill, lintel and reinforcement units surrounding it.

Architectural and split-face units#

Architectural CMUs may have scored, ground, polished, ribbed or split faces. Face geometry, color lot and orientation can affect ordering and waste. Verify whether the published length describes the structural body, finished face or nominal module.

How to estimate CMU weight correctly#

There is no trustworthy universal weight for an “8-inch block.” Unit mass varies with:

  • Concrete density classification and aggregate
  • Moisture condition
  • Web and face-shell geometry
  • Solid percentage and core configuration
  • Unit thickness and shape
  • Architectural face or integral treatment
  • Manufacturer and plant

For planning, obtain the current published unit weight for the exact SKU. Then calculate:

Total block weight = Purchase quantity × Published weight per unit

For pallets:

Block weight on pallet = Units per pallet × Published weight per unit

Add the pallet, packaging and any other materials when a carrier, forklift, slab or storage plan requires the complete loaded weight. Do not use a generic internet average to approve rigging, transport, floor loading or manual-handling procedures.

The same caution applies to pallet count. Manufacturers package different unit sizes and shapes in different quantities. Enter the supplier’s units-per-pallet value rather than assuming every pallet holds the calculator’s default.

How to read a CMU product listing#

Before ordering, identify at least these fields:

For structural or rated construction, a size match is not enough. Confirm the properties required by the drawings, specifications, adopted code and listed assembly.

Worked example: comparing 6-inch and 8-inch CMU#

Consider a wall with 160 square feet of net masonry area. Both candidate units use an 8 × 16-inch nominal face.

Theoretical units = 160 sq ft × 1.125
                  = 180 full-block equivalents

If a 5% purchasing allowance is selected for the project:

Purchase target = 180 × 1.05
                = 189 units

The face count is 189 for either thickness. What must not be assumed is that the two orders have the same:

  • Weight
  • Pallet quantity
  • Mortar volume
  • Grout capacity
  • Structural performance
  • Price

Those values require the exact product data. The example demonstrates why a block calculator separates face coverage from thickness-dependent materials.

Choosing actual dimensions in the calculator#

The Efficienco calculator’s common U.S. presets use typical actual dimensions that are ⅜ inch smaller than their nominal labels, plus an independent ⅜-inch joint. For an exact takeoff:

  1. Select the closest nominal preset.
  2. Open Actual unit dimensions & mortar joint.
  3. Replace the preset with dimensions from the selected product.
  4. Confirm the intended joint thickness.
  5. Enter product-specific weight, pallet and core data where those results are needed.

The module used for face coverage is:

Module face = (Actual length + Joint) × (Actual height + Joint)

Width is recorded separately because it affects thickness-related quantities rather than the wall’s elevation area.

Common CMU size mistakes#

Treating nominal dimensions as physical dimensions#

A nominal 8-inch-thick block will not ordinarily measure a full 8 inches. Use actual dimensions for clearances and coordination.

Adding mortar to nominal dimensions#

The nominal module already includes the joint. Add the joint to actual dimensions, not to the nominal face.

Assuming every 8 × 8 × 16 unit is interchangeable#

Units with the same label can differ in shape, weight, appearance, properties and core configuration. Match the specified product.

Using thickness to change face count#

If height and length are unchanged, changing only the depth does not change the number of modular positions in the wall.

Ordering only standard stretchers#

Corners, jambs, bond beams, lintels, half units and architectural shapes need their own schedule.

Using a generic block weight#

Supplier data is necessary for pallet, freight and handling decisions. A search-result average is not a safe design value.

What are the actual dimensions of an 8 × 8 × 16 CMU?#

What is the standard CMU block size?#

How many 8 × 8 × 16 blocks are in one square foot?#

Do 6-inch and 8-inch blocks cover the same wall area?#

They can, when both have the same 8 × 16-inch nominal face. The 8-inch unit creates a thicker wall, but thickness alone does not change face coverage.

How much does a CMU block weigh?#

It depends on unit thickness, concrete density, moisture, shape and manufacturer. Use the published weight of the exact product; do not rely on one generic weight for ordering or load planning.

Are cinder blocks and CMUs the same size?#

“Cinder block” is often used informally for modern concrete blocks. The name does not define the product’s dimensions or properties. Order by the manufacturer’s CMU designation, dimensions, shape and required specification.

Are metric CMUs exactly equivalent to U.S. blocks?#

Not necessarily. Some metric values shown in U.S. literature are convenient conversions or nominal references rather than interchangeable modular products. Use the dimensions and joint conventions supplied for the actual regional product.
