Cost Per Linear Foot Guide 2026: Formula & Examples

Calculate cost per linear foot, convert quotes into comparable unit rates, and account for waste, labor, fixed charges and tax without hidden assumptions.

What “cost per linear foot” means#

Cost per linear foot expresses price for each foot of length. It is useful for materials and work commonly measured along a run, such as:

  • Fencing and railing
  • Baseboards, casing and trim
  • Pipe, conduit and duct runs
  • Gutters and downspouts
  • Lumber and molding
  • Countertop edges or other fabricated runs
  • Trenching, curbing and selected installed work

A unit rate is useful only when its scope is clear. “USD 20 per linear foot” could mean material alone, labor alone, or a complete installed system. It could include posts and hardware—or exclude them. The number cannot be evaluated without knowing what the rate covers.

Cost per foot formulas#

When length and unit price are known:

Total cost = Linear length × Price per linear unit

When a total quote and included length are known:

Price per linear unit = Comparable total cost ÷ Included linear length

When the budget and unit price are known:

Affordable linear length = Available budget ÷ Price per linear unit

Use the same length unit on both sides. A price per foot cannot be multiplied directly by meters without converting either the rate or the measurement.

Worked example: total cost from a unit rate#

Assume a measured project requires 180 linear feet and the entered material rate is USD 3.40 per foot:

Material cost = 180 ft × USD 3.40/ft
              = USD 612.00

If the supplier adds a stated USD 45 delivery charge:

Subtotal = USD 612.00 + USD 45.00
         = USD 657.00

If an illustrative 6% tax applies to that entire subtotal:

Tax = USD 657.00 × 0.06
    = USD 39.42

Total = USD 657.00 + USD 39.42
      = USD 696.42

The tax example is arithmetic, not tax advice. Taxability, rates and the taxable base vary by jurisdiction, product and service. Enter the rule applicable to the real transaction rather than copying an example percentage.

Worked example: derive price per linear foot from a quote#

Suppose a quote totals USD 4,800 for 160 linear feet of installed work:

Quoted unit rate = USD 4,800 ÷ 160 ft
                 = USD 30.00 per linear ft

That calculation is correct only for the quoted scope. If the total includes a permit, mobilization, demolition and disposal, the USD 30 rate is an effective installed rate, not the material’s shelf price.

If you want the recurring run cost separated from a fixed charge, subtract the verified fixed charge first:

Recurring unit rate = (Total quote − Fixed charges) ÷ Linear feet

For example, if USD 600 of the USD 4,800 quote is a documented fixed mobilization charge:

(USD 4,800 − USD 600) ÷ 160 ft
= USD 26.25 per linear ft

Keep both numbers. USD 26.25 describes the recurring portion under that breakdown; USD 30 describes the effective all-in price for that particular project length.

Measured length versus purchase length#

The measured project length and the quantity purchased may be different.

Purchase length = Base measured length × (1 + Waste percentage)

If a project measures 180 feet and the estimator explicitly applies 10% extra:

180 ft × 1.10 = 198 ft

At USD 3.40 per foot:

198 ft × USD 3.40/ft = USD 673.20

That is USD 61.20 more than pricing the unadjusted 180 feet.

Do not silently add waste. State both the base length and the assumption so another person can reproduce the estimate.

Material sold in fixed stock lengths introduces another step. If 198 feet is needed but the product is sold only in 8-foot pieces:

Pieces = Ceiling(198 ÷ 8)
       = 25 pieces

Ordered length = 25 × 8
               = 200 ft

If pricing is per piece, use the piece price. If pricing is genuinely per foot of stock purchased, use 200 feet. Confirm how the seller invoices the product rather than assuming the display rate is the billing basis.

Material-only and installed rates are not interchangeable#

A material-only rate may include little beyond the product. An installed rate can include several cost layers:

The table is a scope checklist, not a claim that every project includes every line.

When comparing two prices, ask:

  1. Is the same measured length included?
  2. Is the material specification the same?
  3. Are quantities based on measured length or purchase length?
  4. Does the rate include labor?
  5. Are preparation and removal included?
  6. Are accessories, posts, fittings or hardware included?
  7. Are delivery, disposal, permits and tax included?
  8. What conditions could change the total?

The California Contractors State License Board emphasizes that a thorough home-improvement contract should identify the work, materials and cost. Exact contract requirements vary by state and project, so consult the rules that apply where the work occurs.

How to compare quotes per linear foot#

Convert quotes into a common scope before dividing.

Assume three illustrative fence quotes for the same verified 200-foot run:

The lowest raw unit rate is not automatically the lowest comparable price. Quote B excludes gates; Quote C includes removal. First assign the same scope to every alternative or list the differences next to the normalized rate.

Government consumer guidance commonly recommends written, detailed estimates rather than relying on a verbal headline price. For example, the Alaska Department of Law’s home-improvement guidance says estimates should describe the job, materials, labor, timeline and total charges. Treat this as a comparison principle and verify the legal requirements in your own state.

Convert price per foot and price per meter#

NIST defines one international foot as exactly 0.3048 meter. Because a meter is longer than a foot, the numerical price per meter is higher for the same physical rate.

Price per meter = Price per foot ÷ 0.3048

Price per foot = Price per meter × 0.3048

Example: USD 5 per foot to price per meter#

USD 5.00/ft ÷ 0.3048
= USD 16.4042/m

Check by pricing the same physical length:

10 ft × USD 5.00/ft = USD 50.00

10 ft × 0.3048 = 3.048 m
3.048 m × USD 16.4042/m ≈ USD 50.00

Do not multiply a per-foot price by 0.3048 to obtain price per meter; that reverses the relationship.

Currency conversion is separate from unit conversion. Changing USD/ft to CAD/m, for example, requires both a length-unit conversion and a real exchange rate. The Efficienco calculator changes currency labels only and never invents an exchange rate.

Cost per foot for fences#

A fence’s linear footage usually follows its plan-view runs. A rectangular 60 × 40-foot perimeter with a 4-foot gate has:

Gross perimeter = 2 × (60 + 40) = 200 ft
Net fence run = 200 − 4 = 196 ft

Before multiplying 196 feet by an installed rate, confirm how the gate is priced. Some quotes exclude the gate width from the fence run but add a separate gate price. Others quote a package. Posts, corners, terminal assemblies, slopes and removal can also make a flat per-foot comparison incomplete.

Do not use a cost-per-foot calculator to decide post spacing or fence structural requirements. It prices the length and entered assumptions; it does not design the fence.

Cost per foot for baseboards and trim#

For baseboards, first calculate the wall runs and subtract openings that receive no trim. Then distinguish material length from installed scope.

An installed trim quote may depend on:

  • Profile and material
  • Factory-finished versus field-finished product
  • Number of corners and returns
  • Wall condition and preparation
  • Removal of existing trim
  • Caulking, filling, sanding and painting
  • Furniture protection and cleanup
  • Stock lengths and seam placement

Two rooms with the same perimeter can require different labor. A simple square room and a room with many corners, short returns and built-ins should not be assumed to have identical installation costs merely because their linear footage matches.

Cost per linear foot versus cost per square foot#

Use cost per linear foot when pricing length. Use cost per square foot when pricing area.

If a material is sold per linear foot but covers a surface, the installed coverage width connects the two rates:

Area covered per linear foot = Installed width in feet × 1 ft

Cost per square foot = Cost per linear foot ÷ Installed width in feet

For an illustrative product costing USD 4 per linear foot with a 6-inch installed width:

6 in ÷ 12 = 0.5 ft coverage width

USD 4/linear ft ÷ 0.5 ft
= USD 8/ft² of covered area

This conversion applies to the stated material rate only. It does not automatically include waste, labor, accessories or fixed project costs.

Separate fixed and variable costs#

A simple project-price model is:

Material or recurring cost = Purchase length × Unit rate

Subtotal = Recurring cost + Fixed entered costs

Tax = Taxable subtotal × Applicable tax rate

Total = Subtotal + Tax

Fixed costs matter more on small jobs. Consider the same illustrative USD 300 mobilization charge:

That does not mean the underlying material or labor rate changed. It means the same fixed charge is distributed over a different quantity.

When deriving a unit rate from a total, decide whether you need:

  • Recurring unit rate: fixed charges removed before division.
  • Effective project rate: complete project total divided by project length.

Both can be useful, but label them correctly.

Avoid false precision in early estimates#

A calculator can display cents, but input uncertainty may be much larger than a cent.

If the length is preliminary, the material is not selected, waste is unknown or installation scope is incomplete, present a scenario rather than a promise. For example:

Measured length: 180 ft
Planning length at entered 10% extra: 198 ft
Entered material rate: USD 3.40/ft
Material subtotal: USD 673.20
Delivery, labor and tax: not included

This is more trustworthy than calling USD 673.20 the “project cost.”

Update the calculation when field measurements, supplier quantities and written scope become available.

Comparing different scopes#

Material-only and installed rates are not direct competitors. Normalize the inclusions first.

Pricing measured length instead of billed quantity#

The seller may charge by stock piece, roll, bundle or minimum order rather than the exact installed length.

Adding waste twice#

Check whether a supplier or contractor quantity already contains overage before adding another percentage.

Dividing fixed costs without labeling them#

An all-in rate derived from one project length may not transfer to a much larger or smaller job.

Mixing price per foot and price per meter#

Convert either the rate or the length so both use the same unit.

Treating a currency label as an exchange rate#

Changing the displayed currency code does not convert the monetary value.

Using an online rate as a substitute for a current quote#

Product, labor, freight, access and scope vary. Use the formula with current project-specific inputs.

Divide the comparable total cost by the included linear feet. If the total is USD 1,000 for 100 feet, the effective rate is USD 10 per foot.

Should waste be included in cost per foot?#

It depends on what the rate represents. A material estimate should normally price the purchase quantity. A quote-derived effective rate may already include waste. Record the basis to avoid double counting.

Is price per linear foot the same as price per square foot?#

No. Price per linear foot prices length; price per square foot prices area. Converting between them requires an installed coverage width.

Why does a short job cost more per foot?#

Fixed expenses such as delivery, setup or mobilization are divided across fewer feet. The effective per-foot rate can therefore rise even when the recurring rate is unchanged.

Can I use one per-foot rate for every project?#

Not safely. Different materials, site conditions, quantities, accessories, labor scope and fixed costs can change the result.
