Use the Cubic Yards to Tons Calculator to enter the material density, switch direction and keep ordering allowances separate.
Why a yard cannot equal one fixed number of tons#
A cubic yard describes volume. A ton describes mass. The missing connection is bulk density: how much the material weighs for each unit of occupied volume. A product name such as gravel, sand or stone does not identify a single exact density.
Vulcan's aggregate estimator separates dimensions, density, geology and product type. Follow the same discipline when comparing a yard-based delivery quote with a weight-based quote. Prefer a supplier value for the exact product and stated condition over a generic preset.
Short tons versus metric tonnes#
The NIST conversion factors distinguish US customary mass from metric mass. Here short ton = 2,000 lb and tonne = 1,000 kg. One short ton is exactly 907.18474 kg, so a quoted number of tonnes is not interchangeable with the same number of short tons.
US short tons = yd³ × 27 × lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000
yd³ = US short tons × 2,000 ÷ (27 × lb/ft³)
metric tonnes = m³ × kg/m³ ÷ 1,000
m³ = metric tonnes × 1,000 ÷ kg/m³
Keep all intermediate arithmetic at full precision. Round the final order to the supplier's selling increment.
Density examples: hypothetical inputs, not product specifications#
Every density in this table is an explicitly hypothetical arithmetic input, chosen to show sensitivity. None is a measured typical value, supplier quote or recommendation. Reviewed October 25, 2026.
| Illustrative material scenario | Entered density | Factor | Mass for 5 yd³ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gravel example | 100 lb/ft³ | 1.350 short tons/yd³ | 6.750 short tons |
| Sand example | 105 lb/ft³ | 1.4175 short tons/yd³ | 7.0875 short tons |
| Crushed-stone example | 95 lb/ft³ | 1.2825 short tons/yd³ | 6.4125 short tons |
| Crusher-run example | 110 lb/ft³ | 1.485 short tons/yd³ | 7.425 short tons |
Changing density while holding volume fixed changes the mass proportionally. That is why a convenient factor copied from another order can produce a misleading truck quantity.
A step-by-step purchase comparison#
Suppose your measured geometry requires 5 yd³, and your supplier confirms 100 lb/ft³ on the same condition basis. The base mass is:
5 × 27 × 100 ÷ 2,000 = 6.75 short tons
If a separately selected allowance is 10%, the order becomes 5.5 yd³ or 7.425 short tons. These are two descriptions of the same modeled order, not two allowances to apply sequentially.
Now suppose a supplier sells in 0.5-short-ton increments. Rounding 7.425 up gives 7.5 short tons. At a hypothetical $40 per short ton and $100 delivery, the pretax budget is 7.5 × $40 + $100 = $400. Those prices are invented solely to demonstrate arithmetic. Supplier minimums and tax may change a real quote.
For the reverse check, 7.425 short tons at 100 lb/ft³ represents 7.425 × 2,000 ÷ (27 × 100) = 5.5 yd³. The conversion tool can perform this reverse calculation, but a truck scale reading still cannot reveal volume without a compatible density.
Avoid moisture, compaction and rounding mistakes#
Ask what condition the density represents. Loose stockpile volume and finished compacted volume are different measurement bases. ASTM C29/C29M defines aggregate bulk-density test procedures; a preset is not a test certificate. Do not apply a loose density to a compacted design volume without a justified conversion.
Keep allowances visible. If the supplier has already converted a finished requirement to an order quantity, adding another generic compaction or waste factor may count the same risk twice. Finally, do not pool incompatible products into one density simply because they arrive on the same day.
Choose the tool matching your measurements#
Use Crusher Run, Crushed Stone or River Rock when you start with area and depth. Use Paver Base when aggregate base and bedding sand need separate layers. The crusher-run density guide explains its condition-specific ordering issue in more detail.
For an existing volume or scale-ticket mass, return to the yards-to-tons converter with the supplier's density and units. Record the inputs alongside the result so a later quote can be compared on the same basis.
