How to use this calculator

Measure the treatment area
Enter the complete paved surface, including its joints, and subtract any section you are not treating. Manufacturer coverage is normally stated per paved area.
Match coverage to the job
Use the range for your product, package size, paver size and joint dimensions. The example presets are not a model for every paver pattern.
Set the allowance and stock
Choose a purchasing buffer and subtract usable whole bags already available. A zero-buffer calculation is useful when the selected rate already includes waste.
Compare the range
The lower bag count uses higher coverage; the higher count uses lower coverage. For unusual patterns, a measured test area or manufacturer takeoff is more useful than a broad preset.

Formula and worked example

Net paved area = total paved area − excluded area
Allowance-adjusted area = net paved area × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Minimum required bags = round up(adjusted area ÷ higher coverage)
Maximum required bags = round up(adjusted area ÷ lower coverage)
Bags to buy = required bags − usable whole bags on hand, with a minimum of zero

For 400 ft², no excluded area and a 10% allowance, the calculation uses 440 ft². At 65–85 ft² per bag, the range is ceil(440 ÷ 85) to ceil(440 ÷ 65), or 6–7 bags. If two usable matching bags are already on hand, buy 4–5 more. The coverage range represents different possible consumption rates; it is not a statistical confidence interval.

How a coverage range changes bag quantities

Illustrations include a 10% allowance and no existing stock. The 65–85 ft² range is the cited Gator narrow-joint example, not universal polymeric sand coverage.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 50-lb bag of polymeric sand cover?

There is no single universal coverage. This tool uses the range you enter for your product and joint layout. The cited Gator example lists different ranges for narrow and wide joints; a different paver size or depth can change consumption.

Should I enter only the gaps between the pavers?

No. In this coverage-based calculator, enter the full paved surface area. The product’s area-per-bag figure already reflects joint consumption for its stated conditions. Entering only gap area would apply that adjustment twice.

Does changing bag weight automatically change coverage?

No. Use the coverage stated for the exact product and package being purchased. Bag weight alone does not establish a reliable coverage rate across products.

Can I use this to estimate bedding sand?

No. Polymeric joint sand occupies the joints, while bedding sand forms a layer below the pavers. Use a sand-volume or paver-base calculator for that layer.

Does the result tell me how to install or water the sand?

No. Follow the chosen product’s current instructions for compatible applications, preparation, joint depth, compaction and water activation. This tool only estimates the purchasing quantity.

It does not infer coverage from joint width alone, calculate bedding material, approve an application or predict performance. It assumes every bag has the same selected coverage.
