Estimate the sand between pavers#
This tool estimates jointing material, not the bedding course under the pavers. Add paved zones, select a product-label coverage range, and enter a handling allowance. Multiple zones share one selected product and coverage assumption before whole bags are rounded.
Product coverage mode#
For coverage from C_low to C_high per bag, the bag interval is ceil(adjusted area ÷ C_high) through ceil(adjusted area ÷ C_low). The larger bag count is highlighted. If the label gives one coverage value, enter it in both fields.
The labeled Gator examples use the supplier’s published square-foot coverage chart. They are product-specific, and do not infer new coverage from changed paver dimensions. Replace the range when changing products or installation conditions.
Worked example: a coverage range#
For 300 ft² with an entered 5% allowance, adjusted area is 315 ft². At an entered 65–85 ft² per bag, the range is ceil(315 ÷ 85) to ceil(315 ÷ 65), or 4–5 bags. Optional cost uses the highlighted five-bag purchase, not the midpoint.
Joint geometry mode#
For a repeating rectangular grid, joint fraction = 1 − LW ÷ [(L + j)(W + j)], where L and W are actual paver dimensions and j is the clear joint width. Multiply by paved area and actual filled joint depth to estimate volume, then apply the handling allowance.
Bag count requires an actual compacted joint-volume yield per bag from the supplier or a measured test. The tool intentionally starts this field blank. A 50 lb bag label is mass, not a compacted-volume yield. Irregular flagstone, variable joints, chamfers and perimeter effects do not follow this simple repeating-grid model.

The selected product’s current instructions determine suitable joints, fill depth, substrate, weather limits and activation procedure.
