This mini split sizing calculator provides homeowners and HVAC installers with an accurate thermal load estimation designed to bridge the gap between simple square-footage charts and overly complex Manual J calculations.
The estimator utilizes the following base formulas and multiplier cascades:
Ceiling Multiplier = +5% for every 1 foot above 8 ft
Insulation Multiplier = Poor (+25%), Excellent (-10%)
Sun Exposure Multiplier = Heavy Sun (+10%), Shaded (-10%)
Climate Multiplier = Hot or Cold Extremes (+15%)
Calculated Load = Base × Ceiling × Insulation × Sun × Climate
Why we recommend slightly rounding up: Modern ductless mini splits utilize variable-speed inverter compressors. Unlike old window AC units that only run at 0% or 100% power, an inverter mini split can throttle its compressor down to as low as 30% of its rated capacity. Because of this, it is exceptionally safe to round your calculated load up to the next available standard size (e.g., if you calculate 14,000 BTUs, buy an 18,000 BTU unit) without risking short-cycling.
